Freshman Giovanni Giattino scored the Mavs only goal in a Saturday afternoon overtime defeat at Kansas City. UNO has lost the last four matches in a row, including two conference games to fall to 4-9-1 and 2-2-1 in The Summit League.

 

The Maverick men’s soccer team suffered a gut-wrenching, sudden-death 2-1 overtime defeat Saturday to UMKC in Kansas City, Mo. UMKC’s Jordan Rideout connected on a goal just 4:03 into overtime to give the Kangaroos a 2-1 win.  

For UNO, the loss drops the Mavs' record to 4-9-1 and 2-2-1 in The Summit League, putting them in third place in the conference with seven points. 

UMKC is now 6-7-2 and 4-1 in The Summit League, tied for first place.UMKC struck first with a goal from David Sarabia, capitalizing on a free kick in the 42nd minute to make it 1-0 UMKC.  The Mavs were able to level the score in the 62nd minute when Giovanni Giattino scored his second goal of the season off a Logan Mendez assist for the equalizer.  The teams played to a stalemate to end regulation forcing sudden death overtime. 

In overtime, Rideout would strike for UMKC delivering the final blow to the Mavs on a header assisted by Sylvester Yiadom. The Roos of UMKC proved to be the aggressors, outshooting the Mavs 13-6.  UNO returns to Omaha for their final home game of the season on Sunday, Oct. 28 at noon against the Summit League leading Oakland Golden Grizzlies.
