Four Mavs recieve academic honor

Four Maverick seniors, Melanie McCormick  and Logen Watts on the women’s soccer team and junior Felipe Da Silva and sophomore Chava Gargia on the men’s team, were named to the 2013 Summit League Academic All-League team this season.

    Watts, majoring in business administration, had a 3.93 GPA while anchoring the Mavericks defensive backline that produced two shutouts this season. She played 16 games this season, recorded one shot, and one shot on goal, and was third on the team in minutes played at 1,332.

    McCormick, who also made the all-academic team last year, recorded a 4.0 GPA as a biology major. She also scored four goals and one assist this year while starting in 15 of the teams 16 games.

    Junior Felipe Da Silva, who comes to UNO from Rio De Janeiro, was named to the All Summit League first team this season and also twice named the defensive player of the week. He carried a 3.86 GPA in business while starting every game at center back. He led a Maverick back line that helped post a 0.83 goals against average in conference play to rank second in the league.

    Garcia, a second team all-league selection, held a 3.45 GPA while majoring in social work. He led the Mavs with 12 points on three goals and six assists. He was ranked sixth in the summit league in scoring and tied for second in assists.
