UNO alum may be next secretary of defense

Bloomberg News and other sources report that UNO alumnus Chuck Hagel is the leading candidate to become the next secretary of defense.

Hagel graduated from UNO in 1971 with a bachelor's degree in history.

The former Nebraska Senator visited campus in October where he hosted a town hall about campaigning, current issues and his successful 1996 senate campaign. The town hall was held in conjunction with the Criss Library's exhibit “Campaign 1996: Hagel for Senate,” featuring artifacts from the U.S. Senator Chuck Hagel Archives. The exhibit closed in November but the library is the permanent home for the archives.

Hagel, a Vietnam veteran, dedicated the new MaV USO offices on the same visit.
