June Mecham

A UNO history professor passed away at the beginning of March after an extended illness.June L. Mecham, 35, was an assistant professor of history specializing in medieval and women's history. Her research interests included female spirituality and monasticism, as well as the interaction between material culture and devotional practices in late medieval Germany.

Mecham joined the UNO History Department in 2005, and she had frequently taught a survey course in medieval history and a course in women in medieval and renaissance society.

She also served as an assistant editor for the Web site MonasticMatrix, a scholarly resource for the students of women's religious communities from 400 A.D. to 1600 A.D.

This semester, Mecham was teaching a special topics course on the UNO Women's Centennial Archive Project. The Internet mediated course will be taught by department chair Sharon Wood with assistance from other faculty members, Wood said.

Mecham is survived by her husband Gary Mecham, her daughter Evelyn Mecham and her mother Sheryl Mueller. A memorial service was held Thursday at All Saints Episcopal Church in Omaha.

A memorial fund was also established at Mid City Bank with the proceeds of gifts intended as a college fund for Evelyn.

Anyone wishing to contribute to the June L. Mecham Memorial Fund can do so at any branch office of Mid City Bank or by care of Wood or professor Mark Scherer.
