University of Nebraska at Omaha students are invited to attend a “I Vote for My Family” meeting Thursday, Sept. 19, to get youth leaders from Omaha’s Latino community involved in the 2014 election.
The meeting will take place from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Heartland Workers Center office, located at 4923 S. 24 St.
In the 2012 election, 12.1 million eligible Latino voters did not vote, of those eligible voters, 36 percent ranged in the age from 18 to 29. The goal of the “I Vote for My Family” effort is to get those people involved and to the polls, said Abbie Kretz, senior organizer at the Heartland Workers Center.
“We want to help these people become actors in their own lives, to stop letting adults make the decisions and let their opinions be heard,” Kretz said. “It’s not too soon to be thinking about the 2014 election.”
