More than 100 hot spaghetti dinners were served to less fortunate members of the Omaha community during a volunteer event organized by UNO royalty.

Homecoming Queen Nicole Massara organized the event Saturday at First Baptist Church in Omaha, which she said embodied the community service mentality at UNO.

"Everyone at the church was so overwhelmed with the enthusiastic help from all the volunteers," Massara said.

Left over food from the event was donated to the Omaha Day House, the Open Door Mission and was used for take-home meals for those who were not able to make it to the church after Friday night's snowstorm.

"We ended up serving about 130 meals at the church and the leftovers went to the Open Door Mission, so in all we served around 200 meals," Massara said.

Massara learned about the opportunity while on the campaign trail for Homecoming royalty. Russell Smith, an associate professor of public administration, approached Massara about volunteering with Mosaic Community Development, which works with the Park Avenue neighborhood.

Among those who volunteered were two professors from the College of Business Administration as well as representatives of UNO athletic teams, Student Organizations and Leadership Programs, Student Government, Maverick Productions and other colleges on campus.

Massara said she believes volunteering is an important part of the college experience.

"I think it is an amazing way for UNO to engage in the community, make a difference and garner respect from our city," Massara said.
