The 2013 MTV Video Music Awards was one for the record books. The event had people talking about the performances, the fashion and of course, the surprises. It seemed to be an “anything goes” type of evening. Miley Cyrus’s performance, Taylor Swift dissing Harry Styles and ‘NSYNC reunited were the talk of the night, as well as those who won a VMA Moonman.
The moment that had everyone talking was Miley Cyrus’s performance of “We Can’t Stop.” The now-infamous performance started with Cyrus walking out in a teddy bear leotard onto a stage full of life-size “boo” bears. Her mildly inappropriate choreography had part of the crowd cheering and the other part cringing.
It is rumored Cyrus wanted to outdo the Britney Spears and Madonna stunt, when they kissed onstage in 2003. Cyrus certainly has people’s attention now.
Cyrus’s provocative show continued with a next-to-nothing latex bikini costume she wore for her duet with Robin Thicke.
Lady Gaga did another over-the-top, theatrical performance that only Gaga could do. The performance included multiple costume changes and started off the award show in style. Her performance of “Applause” had people applauding from the moment it began.
Justin Timberlake included a medley of his best work, which lasted 15 minutes. During the medley, Timberlake surprised the audience with a reunited performance from his boy band ‘NSYNC. This surprise really did bring sexy back.
Timberlake took home three Moonman awards. He won Video of the Year and Best Editing for “Mirrors.” He also won Best Directing for “Suit & Tie.”
Macklemore tied Timberlake with three awards, as well. He walked away with Best Video with a Social Message, Best Hip-Hop Video and Best Cinematography.
Best Male Video of the Year went to Bruno Mars for his song “Locked Out of Heaven.” Mars also took home Best choreography. “Best Song Ever” by One Direction won the Best Song of the Summer award.
Best Visual Effects went to Capital Cities for their popular song “Safe and Sound.” Janelle Monáe was awarded Best Art Direction for her song “Q.U.E.E.N.” Pink and Nate Ruess took home the Best Collaboration award for “Just Give Me A Reason.”
“Up In The Air” by Thirty Seconds To Mars got Best Rock Video, and Selena Gomez took home Best Pop Video for “Come & Get It.” Austin Mahone was named the Artist To Watch.
Another artist to watch is Taylor Swift. Swift took home Best Female Video of the Year.
Swift’s thank you speech was another one of the memorable moments at the 2013 VMAs. Swift accepted the award with confidence and poise, but also with a little red in her veins, as she personally thanked Harry Styles from One Direction for the award.
The VMAs also had performances by Ariana Grande, Austin Mahone, Bruno Mars, Drake, Kanye West, Katy Perry and Macklemore and Ryan Lewis.
From performers, presenters and audience members, the awards show held a solid roster of A-list stars. The Smith family was in attendance along Selena Gomez, Jimmy Fallon, Kevin Hart and the members of One Direction.
Needless to say if anyone did miss out on seeing this year’s MTV VMAs they are certainly hearing about them. The award show is reported as the most watched show in MTV history. Viewers will have to tune in next year to see if MTV can top this year’s twerk-induced performance.
